Honesdale Historic House Tour on July 7, 2007

The Friends of the Wayne County Public Library are sponsoring their second Historic House Tour on Saturday, July 7, 2007 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The tour will start at the Wayne County Public Library at 1406 North Main Street, Honesdale and will be a self-paced walking tour of the first floors of 10 Victorian houses in the Honesdale’s Historic District. Tickets will be available at the library and the $20 ticket price will include a brochure with a map of the tour, photos, and historical information about each house.

Beverages and light refreshments for be for sale at the library. Because of the nature of the tour, children under age 8 will not be permitted on the tour. Last year’s Historic House Tour was a tremendous success with over 300 persons enjoying the architectural treasures and the festive atmosphere of North Main Street, with all proceeds going to the Library.

This year there will be 7 “new” and 3 “repeat” houses on the tour, all beautifully maintained and restored, from the impressive brick Victorian library itself to several charming smaller Victorians on East Street and several homes that have received the Wayne County Historical Society’s Historic Preservation Award because they reflect the growth and prosperity of Honesdale during the late 19th century.

Several of the homes that have been modernized, especially in the kitchen areas, still retain the features and character of their origins. Elegant birds-eye maple staircases and woodwork, built in cabinets, original fireplaces and lighting fixtures, and other period details can be found in many of the houses chosen for the tour. The Friends are proud to offer this unique opportunity to see the inside of these ten historic gems; lovely backyard and side gardens at some of them will also be part of the tour.

The Friends of the Wayne County Public Library are very grateful for the generosity of the homeowners involved, who are sharing their unique part of Honesdale’s historical heritage and who are giving substantial financial support to the library through their participation in this event. The Friends are also grateful to the Wayne County Historical Society which has generously provided relevant historical data about the houses. Their excellent new booklet, Walking Historic Honesdale is on sale at the library for those wishing to further enjoy and explore the borough’s architectural heritage. The Wayne County Chamber of Commerce hosted The Little Engine That Could in Honesdale, PA this past weekend. Children's activities, story reading, musical entertainment, costumed characters from the book and a Little Engine toy store were featured on the Wayne County Visitors Center property and it is being called a huge success. Regaled by peacocks in the garden, soothed by the soft air of the organic greenhouse, and delighted with the delicate hues of spring lettuce, weekend guests and local supporters joined Himalayan Institute residents to plant castor beans and discuss the Institute’s BioVedic energy farming project.

Ishan Tigunait, Director of the Himalayan Institute Humanitarian Initiatives, told the crowd in the greenhouse about the Institute’s pongamia tree energy farming projects in India and Africa. He showed us seeds from this tree which is native to India. Oil pressed from those seeds can replace diesel fossil fuels.

Drought resistant and requiring little or no irrigation or fertilization, a pongamia tree produces seeds for 50 years, and provide jobs and cash for farmers in some of the most impoverished rural economies in the world.

In addition to greening a desolate, parched landscape, and producing products and cash, biodiesel processed from pongamia oil results in almost 50% less carbon dioxide than fossil fuel diesel. Roger Hill, the director of the Institute’s BioVedic Farming program, described how BioVedic organic farming techniques used by the Institute reduce the emission of climate altering gases like nitrous oxide associated with mechanized agriculture and petrochemical based fertilizers.

He also discussed unique traditional agricultural practices in Africa, and then passed out castor beans, another candidate for energy farming. After planting our castor beans in the greenhouse, we enjoyed traditional Indian tea (chai), cookies, popular chants in Sanskrit, and the company of like-minded people. Guests were gifted with fledgling heirloom tomatoes, and everyone was grateful for the opportunity to express our desire to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, protect our environment, and create a sustainable and prosperous society for all.

October 25th Honesdale, PA: - In a press conference held earlier today in the Community Room of the Wayne County Visitors Center in Honesdale PA, Honesdale Roots & Rhythm Music & Arts Festival Co-Chairs and Founders Gail Tucker (Greater Honesdale Partnership) and John Rocklin (Wayne County Arts Alliance) officially announced the date of the 2007 festival, confirmed artists, their media sponsors and sponsors (to date), and the raffle and t-shirt fundraiser details.

The second annual Honesdale Roots & Rhythm Music & Arts Festival will be held on Saturday June 23, 2007, in Honesdale’s Central Park, rain or shine. The festival is FREE to all who attend, and will kick off at approximately 10:00 a.m. with music playing on Main Street until noon, with music starting on the main stage at 1:00 p.m., three hours earlier than last year.

Also announced was the addition of an acoustic stage in the park which will host music between the main stage performers. Michael Cloeren, host of Mountain of Blues radio show and founder and producer of The Pocono Blues Festival will once again be the festival’s Master of Ceremonies.

The committee is excited to announce that the Headliner for the 2007 Festival will be, from Chicago’s Southside, blues man Lil’ Ed & the Blues Imperials. Recently, Lil’ Ed was featured on Late Night With Conan O’Brian when the show was broadcasting from Chicago.

Also featured on the Main Stage will be Wayne “The Train” Hancock the master of hillbilly swing, a roots Renaissance man, and a country singer’s country singer. Opening the festival will be Red Molly, playing a variety of stringed instruments, and singing in tight three-part harmony, creating their distinctive, rootsy sound.

The festival committee also announced that Peter Florance of Florance Custom Guitars and Voodoo Pickups has graciously donated another beautifully handmade guitar for the raffle, valued at $2,500.00.

Graphic designer Jeff George of Jeff George Design and creator of the Honesdale Roots & Rhythm Music & Arts Festival logo will be the artist painting the guitar this year. Also being offered as part of the raffle is a Bose Wave radio system with multi-CD changer, which, when coupled with a CD from each Main Stage performer, will have a value of $900.00, graciously donated by Deborah Bailey, publisher of Connections Magazine.

Additional items on the ticket this year include A John Rocklin 18” x 20”, limited edition, framed photograph, valued at $800.00, Two Flex Tix Packages (16 tickets each) for the 2007 Wildflower Music Festival, which may be used in any combination, at any concert (with the exception of the Special Performance Concert) throughout their regular season, valued at $600.00, and a three-day ticket package for two to the 2007 Pocono Blues Festival, valued at $150.00.

The raffle tickets are available for a donation of $5.00 each and are currently available from committee members, the Greater Honesdale Partnership, and the following Honesdale area locations: Music & Video Express (619 Main Street), The Dime Bank (at their Honesdale, Hawley, & Damascus locations), The Honesdale National Bank (Main Office at 733 Main Street, Corporate Office at 724 Main Street, and their Rte. 6 branch office), Mary Beth Bridals (849 Main Street), Glinsky’s Kitchen Capers (652 West Park Street), and the Himalayan Institute Main Street (630 Main Street). More locations will be announced as they materialize. Only 5000 tickets will be printed.

The Committee also unveiled the official art work for the festivals T-Shirts, designed by Jeff George and manufactured by Dan Cox of Aura Tie Dye. The shirts will come in two designs and will retail for $20.00 and $15.00 each.

This event is completely sponsored and funded by the generous gifts of time and monetary donations made by corporate sponsors, small businesses’, and individuals from the local and surrounding communities. Without these commitments, this festival would not be possible. To produce a one day event of this nature and magnitude takes thousands of dollars, hundreds of people, countless man hours, and is a year in the making. This year, we are thrilled to announce that The Dime Bank and The Honesdale National Bank are two of the platinum sponsors of the Festival, and Wayne Bank has come on board as a silver sponsor.

Arts Alliance Receives Donation

Honesdale – On Saturday Yanni Glykokokalos, president of the Wayne County Arts Alliance, received a donation from the Himalayan Institute – presented in connection with a unique 10-day art exhibition that concluded this weekend at Himalayan Institute Main Street.

With Jeff George, a board member of the WCAA looking on, the exhibition’s organizer, Marge Watkins, presented a check for $250 to Mr. Glykokokalos. The sum represents the proceeds of a silent auction for a pearl and hematite necklace, which was held during the art show, and bid on successfully by Beatrice Rodriquez.

Ms. Watkins announced that the Himalayan Institute also would present a matching donation of $250 to the Wayne County Arts Alliance. Proceeds from all sales during the Sacred Link™ Art Exhibition go to support the global, humanitarian projects of the Institute, including an Adopt-a-School Project in Northern India, the adoption of orphans and victimized children in violence ridden Kashmir, and the support of indigenous artists in developing countries.
